Notre histoire commence dans un rêve rempli de camélias pourpres, devant lesquels passe un masque...
Celui qui porte ce masque est un garçon nommé Yue, qui vit dans un temple au milieu de résidents plutôt... inhabituels. Alors que dans le village le plus proche, Utsuwa, le Festival d'Hiver bat son plein, Kurogitsune (l'esprit renard de Yue) décide que c'est le moment parfait pour eux d'expérimenter le quotidien, les sons et toute la nourriture des humains !
Même si Yue et lui ont l'interdiction formelle de quitter le temple, ils vont malgré tout se faufiler dehors, sans se douter qu'à cet instant leur destin est déjà en route...
